Chippers Hits The Scoresheet

as seen on au.fourfourtwo.com

Scott Chipperfield scored but couldn't prevent FC Basel slipping up again, losing 3-1 to Grasshoppers.

The veteran Australian international, who is in the final year of his contract at Basel, has been playing up front for the Swiss League side so far this season.

And early on in Sunday's contest away to Grasshoppers, Chipperfield could have got the visitors off to a flying start when he met Marco Streller's flick-on, only to fail to connect meaningfully with his shot which was easily saved by opposition stopper Yann Sommer.

Minutes later FCB were made to pay when Gonzalo Zarate's shot was palmed into Antonio Dos Santos's path by Basel keeper Massimo Colomba and he made no mistake with the rebound.

But in the 24th minute, Chipperfield found a yard of space inside the box to meet a precise Valentin Stocker left-wing cross and the Australian stooped to equalise from close-range.

Carlitos blew a chance for Basel to claim the lead before the break firing a shot wide, before Grasshoppers got on top in the second stanza.

On 61 minutes, Davide Calla met a superb deep cross to fire in a header off the underside of the bar, before Zarate sealed the victory waltzing past an ordinary Basel defence and hitting a good shot into the top corner for Grasshoppers' third.

The result suggests Basel's reign at the top of Swiss football is over, as they sit 7th on the Super League table after 6 matches, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses.

In Turkey's Super Lig on Sunday, Michael Petkovic was beaten by 3 strikes in the last 15 minutes as Sivasspor's woeful start to the season continued losing 3-0 to Fenerbahce.

Elsewhere in Turkey, James Troisi started and played 57 minutes as Kayserispor conceded a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Gaziantepspor, while Mile Jedinak made a 75th minute appearance off the bench as Genclerbirligi drew 1-1 against crosstown rivals Ankaraspor, with Bruce Djite not involved.

In Russia's Premier League, Luke Wilkshire played a full game as Dinamo Moscow stayed in touch in the title race winning 1-0 at FK Rostov.

In Romania's Liga I, Spase Dilevski put in a full shift and Michael Baird started and played 82 minutes as Universitatea Craiova eased to a 2-0 win over Pandurii.

In Norway's Tippeligaen, Kasey Wehrman's relegation worries with Fredrikstad FK remained after a disappointing 1-0 loss at IK Start.
