...And Shear Pride In Viduka

Newcastle boss Alan Shearer has praised veteran Australian Mark Viduka for his fantastic display in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough at St James's Park.

Viduka produced easily his finest performance for Newcastle this season in his third successive start as the Magpies claimed a much-needed three points to move out of the drop zone.

And Shearer was full of praise for Viduka, who despite not scoring, was arguably Newcastle's best player afield.

"He was brilliant," said Shearer. "Everything we put into him, it stuck.I looked at it even with 10 minutes left and I was thinking to myself, 'He has still got the energy to cause them problems'.

"That's why the medical side and the fitness side have worked very hard too get him fit, because when he plays like that, he is very difficult to handle. I know what he can do."

The Australian striker, who has had an injury ruined season, is expected to be allowed to leave St James' Park in the European summer but Shearer believes Viduka still offers something to the Magpies.

"A fit Mark Viduka, and more matches, and he can produce a performance like that," Shearer added.

Newcastle, currently above the drop zone only on goal difference, host Fulham this Saturday in the Premier League.
