Chippers Double Basel Boost

EUROROO WRAP: Scott Chipperfield has warmed up for the coming Socceroos matches with two late goals in FC Basel's 5-0 triumph over FC Sion in the Swiss Super League on Sunday.

The veteran Australian was back on the left-side of midfield for Basel on Sunday and his performance helped fire FCB back into title contention and up to third on the table.

The former Wollongong Wolves man had the first chance of the game for Basel on 12 minutes when he met Carlitos' ball with his head but couldn't beat Sion keeper Andris Vanins.

With a frustratingly fruitless first-half on the cards, Basel incredibly struck twice just moments prior to the break courtesy of Marco Streller to take a 2-0 lead into half-time.

Into the second-half, Basel continued to dominate with Alexander Frei making it three on 78 minutes before Chipperfield got in on the act.

Substitute Federico Almerares set up the Australian to strike on 84 minutes and barely two minutes later Vanins failed to deal with a cross and Chipperfield made him pay by making it 5-0 with a tidy finish.

Elsewhere in Europe on Sunday, Mark Bresciano continues to impress new boss Walter Zenga, playing an important role in Palermo's 2-0 win over Juventus in the Italian Serie A.

Zenga employed a 3-4-1-2 system and Bresciano spent alot of time running back and forth down the left helping out defence and attack. But the Australian did so successfully before being replaced on 74 minutes.

Before that, Bresciano blasted a first-half chance over from a corner and had an early second-half header brush the post.

In Turkey's Super Lig, Harry Kewell came off the bench as a 61st minute substitute as Galatasaray slumped to a stunning 3-0 defeat at Ankaragucu.

The Socceroo was introduced with scores at 0-0 and Kewell toiled hard to get the breakthrough before the capital club piled on three goals in the last ten minutes.

Elsewhere in Turkey, Michael Petkovic was back in goals keeping a clean sheet and helping last season's runners-up Sivasspor claim their first win of the Super Lig season with a 2-0 triumph over Mile Jedinak's Antalyaspor. Jedinak played a full game.

James Troisi did not play as Kayserispor won 1-0 at Eskisehirspor, while Bruce Djite also missed out as previously undefeated Genclerbirligi lost 3-0 at leaders Fenerbahce. In the second tier Lig A, Ersan Gulum played as Adanaspor slipped to ninth with a 4-1 loss at Bucaspor.

In Scotland's Premier League, Scott McDonald endured a frustrating afternoon as Celtic slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Rangers in the Old Firm match. McDonald wasn't at his best and had a second-half close-range chance saved. The result sees Rangers close the gap at the top on their Glasgow rivals.

In Sweden's Allsvenskan, Ante Covic kept a clean sheet as IF Elfsborg missed a big chance to press for the title after a 0-0 draw with leaders AIK Stockholm. AIK stay top with a four-point buffer ahead of IFK and then Elfsborg. IFK, though, have a game in hand.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, David Carney was suspended while Nikita Rukavytsya wasn't included as FC Twente won 3-1 at Heracles. The result means last season's runners-up Twente lead the league after 7 matches.

In Russia's Premier League, Luke Wilkshire was absent as Dinamo Moscow coughed up a lead to lose 2-1 at Zenit Petersburg.

In Denmark's Superliga, Nathan Coe played again for struggling Randers as they lost 2-1 at home to Silkeborg.

In Norway's Tippeligaen, Kasey Wehrman played a full game for FC Lyn Oslo as they lost 2-1 at Lillestrom, which means they are relegated.
